Basic school wide interventions for ALL students
3 to 5 Clearly taught rules
- Logically Related to school expectations
- Prominently Posted
- Regularly Reviewed
- Clearly Referenced during correction or reward
- Positively Stated- " Walk in the halls", "keep our hands to ourselves", etc
Positive interaction ratio
Focus on positive interactions-
- specifically pointing out appropriate behavior (catching students being good)
- saying "hello" or using students names respectfully in the hall
- "non-contingent" positive contact- positive interactions students don't need to earn, such as briefly mentioning a student's hobbies or interests, sensitively recognizing birthdays, etc. as students enter the class
- Think of a "relationship account" where positive interactions are like deposits, and corrections or negative interactions are withdrawals. The goal is to keep students' account balance in the positive.
Instructional Pacing
Moving the class discussion at the "just right" pace; fast enough to be engaging, but not so fast that students get lost-
- Frequent opportunities to respond- lots of chances for students to offer answers individually and in groups (7 to 9 opportunities to respond per minute)
- Use the percentage of correct student responses as a gauge- 95% correct means you can speed up, 65% means you need to slow down. About 85% is just right
